Reinforcement Sizing and Resin Compatibility: A Buyer's Guide
Why fiberglass sizing and chopped strand mat binders must match your resin system, how epoxy and polyester differ, and what to confirm on a data sheet before ordering.

A reinforcement and a resin only perform as a laminate when their surface chemistry matches. Glass fibers carry a sizing applied during manufacture, and mats carry a binder that holds the strands together. Both are engineered for specific resin families. Ordering the right weight and weave but the wrong sizing can leave a laminate that will not wet out or bond properly.
This guide explains what sizing and binder do, where epoxy and polyester or vinyl ester systems differ, and which fields to confirm before a purchase. It is a buyer-orientation guide, not a substitute for the supplier's technical data sheet.
Sizing and Binder Are Not the Same Thing
- Sizing (or size / finish): a thin coating applied to glass filaments during forming. It protects fibers during handling and, critically, provides a chemical bridge (often a silane coupling agent) between the glass and a particular resin family.
- Binder: an additional agent used mainly in chopped strand mat and some non-woven products to hold strands in place until the resin wets them out. In many mats the binder is designed to soften or dissolve once the correct resin is applied.
Both are chosen for a target resin. A fabric or mat described only by weight and weave is not fully specified until the sizing and binder basis is known.
The Chopped Strand Mat and Epoxy Example
The clearest compatibility trap is chopped strand mat (CSM). Much CSM is held together with a styrene-soluble (emulsion) binder that is designed to dissolve in the styrene monomer present in polyester and vinyl ester resins. When the binder dissolves, the strands relax and the mat wets out and conforms.
Epoxy contains no styrene monomer, so it does not dissolve that binder the same way. As Fiberglass Warehouse states, fiberglass mat is "commonly bonded with a styrene-based binder, designed to dissolve in polyester and vinyl ester resins," and because "epoxy lacks this component," it "cannot fully saturate or adhere to the fibers within the mat" in the same manner.
The practical consequences for a buyer:
- Emulsion/styrene-soluble CSM is aimed at polyester and vinyl ester layups.
- If a project uses epoxy, confirm a mat with a binder qualified for epoxy (some are marketed specifically for it) rather than assuming any CSM will work.
- Do not treat "chopped strand mat" as a single interchangeable product. The binder chemistry is part of the specification.
This is a compatibility rule about binder and resin chemistry. It does not mean epoxy is inferior; it means the reinforcement must be matched to the resin actually being used.
Match Sizing to the Resin Family
Glass fabric sizings are also formulated for resin families. A silane coupling agent tuned for epoxy does not necessarily perform the same in polyester, and vice versa. Suppliers commonly describe a sizing as suitable for one or more of epoxy, vinyl ester, polyester, or phenolic. Confirm:
- Which resin family the sizing is qualified for.
- Whether a "multi-compatible" size is genuinely validated for your resin, or only tolerated.
- Any shelf-life or storage condition that affects sizing performance.

The point is not to rank resins. It is that the reinforcement's sizing and binder must be chosen for whichever resin the part actually uses.
What to Confirm Before Ordering
Build these into the RFQ so compatibility is not left to assumption:
- Intended resin system stated up front (family and, if known, product).
- Sizing / finish and the resin families it is qualified for.
- Binder type for any mat (styrene-soluble/emulsion, powder, or epoxy-compatible).
- Process (hand lay-up, infusion, RTM) — some binders behave differently under resin flow.
- Data sheet and any compatibility statement in writing.
- A representative wet-out/cure trial on your resin before committing to volume.
Failure Modes to Watch
- Poor wet-out: resin sits on the surface or leaves dry patches — often a sizing/binder mismatch.
- Weak interlaminar bond: the fiber–matrix interface never fully forms.
- Mat that will not conform: binder not dissolving as expected with the chosen resin.
- Inconsistent lots: undocumented sizing changes between batches.
Any of these can appear even when weight and weave are exactly as ordered, which is why sizing and binder belong in the specification.
